Test Day Information
- Is the RTRP test open book or resource assisted? (revised 7/20/10)
Certain resources are provided at the testing center, including a calculator, Form 1040, Form 1040 instructions and Publication 17.
You should view the test tutorial to better understand how to use these sources electronically on test day.
- What should I bring to the test? (posted 10/27/11)
Please bring with you one unexpired U.S. government issued photo ID that includes your name, photo, and signature. Paper and pencil, a calculator, and reference materials will be provided at the test site. Personal items are not allowed in the test room and must be stored in a locker. Persons not scheduled to take a test are not permitted to wait in the test center.
- How long is the RTRP test?
There are 120 questions. The test is timed at 2 hours and your appointment will average 3 hours. You should plan to arrive for your test appointment at least thirty minutes early to check in. Once you are seated in the test room, you will receive a personalized introduction to the testing system. You may also take a short pre-test computer system tutorial. Following the test, you will have the opportunity to participate in a customer satisfaction survey.
- What is the required percentage to pass the RTRP test?
Test questions are weighted in value to arrive at an overall pass/fail score. If you fail the test, you will receive diagnostic information to assist you with future examination preparation. More information about test results can be found in the Candidate Information Bulletin.
- How will I get my RTRP test score?
You will receive your test score at the test center immediately after taking the test.
- Do I have to send my RTRP test results to the IRS?
No. Scores are automatically shared with the IRS and IRS records will be updated accordingly. If you have an online PTIN account, the test information will be updated on the "Next Steps" page in your account in 7-10 business days.
- Can you send my results directly to my supervisor?

- I am a supervisor and want the test results for my entire staff. Can I obtain them?
No. Test results will only be made available to the individual taking the test.
- How many questions do I have to get right in order to pass the test?
There is no exact number of questions to obtain a passing score. Test questions are weighted in value to arrive at an overall pass/fail score. The test's potential scaled scores range from 50 - 500. Scaled scores of 350 and above are passing scores. If you fail the test, you will receive diagnostic information to assist you with future examination preparation. More information about test results can be found in the Candidate Information Bulletin.
- Can I find out which questions I got right and which ones I got wrong?
We will not provide test results on a question-by-question basis. If you did not achieve a passing score, your performance in each Knowledge Domain will be shown on your test results letter. This information can assist you with future examination preparation. For a breakdown of the topics that fit into each domain, view the Test Specifications.
- If I am required to pass the test and have not done so, can I still be considered a Registered Tax Return Preparer?
No. You may not hold yourself out as a Registered Tax Return Preparer. You must pass the test and a tax compliance check before obtaining the Registered Tax Return Preparer credential.
- How did you determine the passing score? What percentage of questions do I need to get right in order to pass?
The passing score was determined by the IRS following a cut score study. The cut score study followed a modified Angoff method for establishing the cut score. A panel of subject matter experts composed of Enrolled Agents, CPAs, unenrolled preparers and IRS representatives developed a definition of the minimally qualified candidate. Using this definition, they considered each item on the base form and estimated the difficulty of the item for the minimally qualified or borderline candidate. The results of these estimates were analyzed and presented to the IRS for final decision. Once the passing score was determined for the base form, Prometric used a statistical equating process to ensure comparability of scores on all forms. Scaled scores are used to report the scores. The tests have been developed to identify the passing candidate from the failing candidate. We do not use either normal distribution or a preconceived pass rate to establish the passing score.
- How is my total scaled score calculated?
Scaled scores are determined by calculating the number of questions answered correctly from the total number of questions in the examination and converting to a scale that ranges from 50 to 500. The IRS has set the scaled passing score at 350, which corresponds to a minimum level of knowledge deemed acceptable by those persons who will be practicing before the IRS. Failing candidates are provided a scaled score value so that they may see how close they are to being successful. For example, candidates that receive a scaled score of 304 are very close to passing. Candidates with a scaled score of 100 are far from passing.
- What do the different levels mean on my test results letter?
If you fail to obtain a passing score, your test results letter gives feedback on your performance level in each Knowledge Domain. Level 1 means that you were considerably below the minimally accepted score. Level 2 means that you were marginally below the minimally accepted score. Level 3 means that you were at or above the minimally accepted score.
- Which areas of the test do I need to study again in order to pass?
In general, Level 1 and Level 2 performance level areas require additional study in order to pass the test.
- Can I get a copy of my scored test so that I can see what I missed?
No. Please refer to your test results letter for information on the areas of the test that may require additional study.
- What should I do if I passed the RTRP test but haven't received my RTRP certificate?
Certificates take 2-4 weeks to process. If it has been more than 45 days since you passed the test, please contact the PTIN Information Line to inquire into the status of your certificate.
NOTE: Certificates may be delayed if the name in your PTIN account doesn't match the name you provided Prometric when scheduling your exam.
More Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I install the ExamMatrix Review product on an Apple/Macintosh computer?
We do not support our software in the Macintosh environment.
- Where is my Installation Code?
It is located on the back of the CD case. If you received an email for a download, the Install Key will be in the email.
- When I enter my Installation Code, I either get an "Invalid Product Installation Code" error message or the system does not activate my software. What should I do?
Verify that you have entered the Installation Code correctly. Be sure to look at it carefully. Sometimes the letter 'O' is actually a zero, and a lower-case letter 'L' is the number one (or vice versa).
- When I try to activate my software via the Internet, I get an error saying I am not connected to the server or the Internet. How do I activate my software?
The activation is being blocked by some kind of security. You will need to either activate manually via e-mail (you will get an e-mail reply), or activate manually via phone (we are open 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Eastern Time).
- Is the ExamMatrix Review software compatible with Microsoft Vista and Windows 7?
Yes, it is. Some of our users have to use the Run as Admin option. Go to the ExamMatrix Desktop icon, right-click on the icon, and select "Run as Admin".
- Adobe X Reader: When I attempt to open your electronic Manuals/References with Abobe Reader X, I get the error, "There was an error opening this document. Access Denied."
The issue is with Adobe Reader X's new Reader Protected Mode.
Please use the following "fix":
- Open Adobe Reader
- Select Edit, then Preferences from the menu
- Select the General tab
- Un-check the "Enable Protected Mode at Startup" option
- Answer "yes" to the "are you sure?" prompt
- Click OK
- Close Adobe Reader X
- Can I print out all of the questions?
No. Our questions are copyrighted and owned by ExamMatrix. In order to protect this valuable company asset, we do not allow you to print all of the questions in the database. However, you may print individual questions. After you answer the question, select Print Question from the drop-down menu under the Session tab at the top of the display window.
- Tables displayed on my screen are not aligned properly. What should I do?
To fix the tables, we have found that adjusting the setup helps. From the main menu, select Options under Setup. Go to the Display tab, where you will see the "Aspect Ratio Modifier" setting. The default setting is 1.0. Changing that setting to 1.5 or 2.0 should fix the problem. If not, then try some other setting numbers.
- I have answered all the objective questions correctly. How should I continue my studies?
At this time, you should start using the Take My Own Path or Customize Session. This option offers some excellent advanced study features. You can look at Questions Missed x Number of Times, Study by Category, or do Timed Tests.
- I am having trouble with my CPE (Continuing Education) course. Who should I call?
MicroMash still owns and maintains the CPE courses. Please call them at 1-800-231-1860.
Just wanted to let you know that as of this week I have passed all three parts of the IRS EA exam thanks to your software. It was a huge help!
All that I can say about this program is "Wow." I have several friends who have taken the CPA Exam and used review programs that were literally a couple thousand dollars more expensive than ExamMatrix. Using this program, I was able to pass all four parts of the exam on my first attempt, while not all of my friends, who used the more expensive programs, were able to pass initially. Perhaps, the most impressive aspect of my experience was that I have no formal training or work experience in the accounting field. I merely prepared with ExamMatrix and used the prior knowledge that I had obtained in college. A great aspect of the program is that the questions are very similar to those on the actual exam. In fact, I believe that there were a few that were actually word for word similar between the review course and the exam. I also really appreciated how there was immediate feedback after each question. The user is able to learn as he or she answers questions. ExamMatrix is a truly remarkable program for anyone who wants to pass the CPA Exam while also saving a considerable amount of money.

I just wanted to let you all know how wonderful your product is. I received your product last November 2010, studied Part 1 and passed 1st time on January 26, 2011. Studied Part 3 beginning in May 2011 passed 1st try on June 28, 2011 and then studied Part 2 beginning in July 2011 and passed 1st try December 1, 2011. WOW I did it!!!!!!.. I will recommend your product to anyone interested, it really worked for me.THANKS SO MUCH!
Hi ExamMatrix team, I just wanted to write to you to thank you for the great software that I purchased from your company for my CPA review. I am happy to say that I was able to pass the entire exam in the 18-month time period between April 2010 and October 2011. About 10 years ago, I took two different live-instruction review courses (Becker and Person-Wolinsky) and was never able to pass any parts of the exam. These courses were extremely expensive and time-consuming and I was left unsatisfied having not passed any parts of the exam. I gave up in May 2003 and did not return to my studies for it until 2010. Your software was much more reasonable in price and its structure gave me the knowledge and test-taking edge that allowed me to pass the entire exam. I was able to use your software at my leisure and study my own way. I took each part of the exam one at a time and passed each one with no problem. My highest score was in AUD, an 86. I scored an 84 in REG and FAR, and received a 79 in BEC. I am very proud of my scores and so very thankful for being able to achieve something that I have wanted for a long time. Thanks again for your great software. I am grateful to your company for helping me achieve something that I have wanted to do since college.
Best regards, Nick
I just passed the final part of the SEE exam this morning and wanted to thank you! I couldn't have done it without your help. I passed all three sections the first try. Your software was easy to use and the explanations to each question/answer were clear and concise. I also liked how the software helped me focus on problem questions. Your technical support department was also super helpful.
I wanted to let you know that I have successfully passed all four sections of the CPA exam. I thought the ExamMatrix software was a great tool to prepare me for the exams. I passed each one on my first attempt. Thanks for all your help during this process!
It was eye opening to see how efficient software such as yours can prepare one for exams.
THIS SOFTWARE IS AMAZING! I PASSED ALL THREE PARTS THE FIRST GO.
I was very pleased with your product and passed all three parts on my first attempt. I am interested in more information on your CPA review course.
I used your ExamMatrix EA Exam Review material to prepare for the exam and was very pleased with it. It was extremely helpful to have previous years' exam questions, explanations of the answers, and references to the IRS materials. I would highly recommend your review course to anyone who plans to take the EA exam in the future.

I just wanted to thank all those at Exam Matrix for the excellent job they do preparing us for the Enrolled Agents exams. I just completed all 3 parts of the exams, passed all the 1st time taken and feel that your courses made all the difference. I recommended your product to a friend of mine and she feels the same way. Keep up the good work.

I bought ExamMatrix near the end of 2009. I was working full time and only had a hour or so a day to study during the week. So I started with using that hour a day to study using ExamMatrix. All I did to study was to answer the test questions in ExamMatrix. I did not read any of the publications or any other materials. I did read the explanations of the correct answer that are presented by the program after you answer a question. For part one I studied about 45 days in this manner and passed on my first attempt. I had to wait for the next exam until May. I followed the same study plan for part two. This took a little longer because there is more material. But once again I passed on the 1st try. When it came time to study for part three I had all the confidence in the world. It only took me a couple of weeks to be prepared to take part three again passing on my first try.
Your program made it so easy to study the material needed to pass the exam. Thanks for developing this great product!!!
I am writing to say thanks for a great product. I passed each of the 3 exams on my first attempt. I took my time to ensure I was ready, and it was worth it. I took only 3 weeks to study for Part 3, and the software guided me along the way to success.
Thanks for the offer, but I am happy to announce that I studied all four parts of the CPA exam using Exam Matrix and passed all four on my first attempt. The program was very helpful in preparing me for the exams. I felt the questions that Exam Matrix provided helped me to understand the concepts and prepared me for the type of questions that I saw on the test better than any other system I looked at. You guys make a great product. Thanks again.

Thank you for your efforts to contact me. Due in large part to the focused study provided by the ExamMatrix software, I was able to pass all four sections of the CPA exam on my first try, and I'm now a licensed CPA. I know that using your software really cut down my study time for the exam, making the whole process much easier than I had expected. Thanks again for the great product and for following up to check on my status.
I Just wanted to pass along a big THANK YOU for developing excellent study materials! The interactive software and "Personal Professor" were a major factor in my study program - resulting in passing all four parts on the first try with an average score of 90 (BEC - 83, REG - 91, AUD - 95, and FAR - 90). Having the ability to study all of the material while focusing on my weak areas increased my comfort level with those hard-to-learn sections, and increased my confidence before exam day. I would recommend your program to anyone - even those without accounting backgrounds - like me!
You guys have been great for me and I can't overstate how confident the use of your software has made me in my preparation for the EA exam.
Just to let you know, yes, I passed the CISA on the first try -- largely thanks to the excellent preparation I was able to do using ExamMatrix. Great product. Thanks.
Phyllis Eriksen, CISA
Just wanted to thank you - exam matrix worked for me. I passed all three parts of the EA exam on the first try!
A few years ago you helped me pass the CIA. Now, using your software to prepare, I passed the CISA exam. I score 681 and, as you know, 450 is a passing score. I'm certain I did well because I used ExamMatrix. Thanks!
After struggling to pass BEC section using ****** CPA review, I turned to ExamMatrix. The material was comprehensive and the questions were reflective of those you would see on the exam. With the help of Exam Matrix, I passed with a 79 and realized my goal of becoming a CPA. Thank you ExamMatrix!
I just wanted thank ExamMatrix for helping me in completing the CPA exam successfully.
I recently ordered your EA exam software. I found it to be very easy to install, comprehensive and actually made studying fun!!! The best part about it was when I received my three letters from the testing site yesterday telling me that I had passed, all three parts, the first time!!! There's no way I would of passed those exams without your study program!!! Thank you!!!
I thought you would in this case and express my gratitude for your CPA exam material. I started taking the CPA exams with January. I took one exam per quarter and, by exclusively using your review course, I passed all four parts of the CPA exam by December without having to retake any of the exams.

Here are my scores on the CISA exam after using the ExamMatrix CISA review software. I used the reference guides/manuals that came with it a little bit but mainly used the software. The ExamMatrix cd was worth every penny; since it aided in my passing the first time. I'm confident the CIA review cd will be just as good.
I passed on the first attempt, with the bonus of having the highest score during the testing window. None of this would have been possible without you ExamMatrix. Thank you! The content and questions had me so well prepared that using your review almost felt like cheating, it's that good!
After struggling to pass using another review, I turned to ExamMatrix. The material was comprehensive and the questions were reflective of those you would see on the exam and the software actually made studying fun!!! With the help of ExamMatrix, I finally passed and realized my goal of becoming a CMA. Thank you ExamMatrix! There's no way I would of passed without your study program!!!
Just a quick note from a satisfied customer to say that I passed Part I first time this morning. Your software was instrumental in my success. 2 more to go.
I just wanted to let you know that I passed the Audit section of the CPA Exam using the ExamMatrix materials. Remember, at the time I took the exam I hadn't taken an audit course, nor had I participated in an audit. What a relief!
What I really like about your program is that I always knew how much I needed to study. I also like the fact that I don't have to spend so much time reading. The instant feedback on the questions are great too. it was a significant help. Thank you.
I have just passed all exams on the first try. Thank you very much. Your study program is wonderful.
